Physical Description

Transfer pattern sampler commemorating the coronation of George VI. This pattern was initially designed for the coronation of Edward VIII (ER) but when he abdicated less than a year after being crowned (he only reigned from 20 Jan 1936 to 11 Dec 1936), the central initial 'E' on this sampler was changed to look more like a 'G' for George VI (GR), who reigned from 11 Dec 1936 to 6 Feb 1952. George VI's coronation was held on 12 May 1937. Various flags and figure motifs symbolising the British armed forces surround the central initials 'GR', above which is a crown. Four buildings are also represented. There are also depictions of the Prince of Wales, the Union Jack and the New Zealand and Australian flags. Possibly stitched in 1937, the year of George VI's coronation. A zigzag border completes the sampler. Crudely cross stitched with silk or rayon thread. There is a small amount of seed or running stitch. Undated and unsigned. Private Collection
