Physical Description
Victory panel sampler 'designed for use as either a fire-screen or picture'. Partially worked printed pattern on khaki cotton with transfer pattern, all cotton threads, needles and instructions. The victory refers to World War II. Nationalistic emblems encircle a centred cross with a dove, olive branch and 'Peace'. The motifs and countries or capitals depicted are from the top : Red Square/Moscow, Dragon/China, Elephant/India, Statue of Liberty/New York, Deer/South Africa, Big Ben/London, Maple leaf/Canada, Eiffel Tower/Paris, Kangaroo/Australia, Fern/New Zealand. The four commemorative texts 'VE May 8th - 9th', 'VJ Aug 15th 16th', 'September 3rd 1939' and ' August 15th 1945' is split between each of the four corners from top left. Flags depicted in both top corners are those of China, England (Union Jack)and the United States of America. A pair of streetlamps, a pair of bells and a bonfire are additional motifs. Satin stitch and stem stitch have been used to complete a few motifs.
