Physical Description

Pictorial sampler with a large eagle above a fruiting tree above a windmill. Other motifs are more or less arranged symmetrically each side of these central motifs within a deep, leafy arcaded border containing alternately, striped tulips and irises. Two large lions, trees and flowers in pots, birds, butterflies, dogs, crowns, a stag, floral sprigs, and bushes and even a tiny house with a lawn and trees feature on this crowded and busy sampler. A small dog has been worked in each outside corner of the border. There is an upper- and a lower-case alphabet and a set of numerals from 1 to 9 with an 0 at the end. All motifs, except the upper-case alphabet, which is worked in four-sided stitch, are cross stitched in silk thread on the fine cream tammy cloth. Green, ecru, beige, and brown threads predominate with touches of grey and blue. Undated and unsigned, but likely to be from the first quarter of the 19th century. Private Collection
