Physical Description

Miniature lettering sampler with two alphabets in upper- and lower-case, a set of numerals from 7 to 10, two baskets of fruit and a set of initials 'CM', with each letter being placed in opposite corners at the bottom of the sampler. Single rows of stitching separate the bands of text and a few small geometric, decorative elements finish the last band and fill the space between the bowls of fruit. There is a small repeat pattern border all round and hemming on all four sides. Cross stitched with multicoloured silk thread on fine ecru evenweave linen. Signed ‘Ann Downes 1840’ Private Collection
