Physical Description

Pictorial band sampler with alphabets, numerals and an arcaded strawberry border. Adam and Eve, both modest behind a satin stitched band of green across their loins, stand on each side of a tree around which is coiled a black and white striped snake. The rest of this pictorial band is made up of two crowned cherubs, two birds and two pots of flowers (striped tulips?), all being positioned symmetrically about the central tree. Bands containing three alphabets with an ampersand at the end, and all missing 'J' and 'U', are separated by rows of small repeat patterns. A set of numerals from 1 to 9 with an 0 at the end is split to follow the first two alphabets. A row of birds completes the second band and alternating hearts and crowns complete the third band. Stitches include cross stitch over both one and two ground threads, Algerian eye stitch over both one and two ground threads, four-sided stitch, satin stitch and petit point (half cross stitch). The ground fabric of natural evenweave linen is hemmed on all four sides with green thread. Dated 1795 and signed ‘Louisa Limbery Her Sampler’. Private Collection
