Physical Description

A framed sampler dated 1800. The sampler is worked on natural coloured linen or woollen ground which has darkened to a light tan. The design is embroidered in silk and consists of a castle and many stylised motifs within a floral border in green and cream and a verse which reads: 'Jesus permit thy gracious name to stand As the first efforts of an infant's hand And as her fingers on the sample move Engage her tender heart to seek thy love With thy dear children may she have a part And write thy name thy self upon her heart' Piety to thy God and benevolence to thy fel low creatures are they not thy great duties What shall teach thee the one like the study of his Works Sarah Warner, aged 12 years, 1800
