Physical Description

Coarse hand-woven hemp skirt constructed in three sections. Yoke section is of undyed, coarsely pleated hemp. Middle section is block printed indigo dyed similar fabric decorated with machine applied strips of red cotton in a geometrical design. This section is attached to the yoke by inserting two pleats into one of the yoke pleats, thus creating the fullness. Two small areas on the front of the skirt are hand appliquéd with diamond pieces in green, pink, yellow and white cotton. The third section is a band of cross stitched squares in pink, blue and green, randomly placed, with applied rectangles of commercial cotton. A fourth section has been removed at some earlier time.
