Physical Description
Panel from a Chinese baby carrier. The ground of black cotton is embroidered in an allover pattern of coloured buttonholed circles joined by chain stitch. In the centre is an appliquéd roundel in surface stitchery on silk and shisha-type glass held in place with brass mounts. Bordered with rows of braid and an embroidered strip in a geometric pattern. This is a Hmong (Miao) piece from Liping county. The peacock motif in the central roundel symbolises dignity and beauty and drives evil away.
