Physical Description
Tubular skirt with applied strip of beadwork and shell embroidery each side. From Sarawak, Borneo. Outer fabric - glossy blue/black cotton, lined with brownish grey cotton fabric. Edged top and bottom with applied striped, loosely woven strip with white and orange pattern darning either side; same loosely woven fabric strips, red and yellow, either side of beadwork and shell embroidery; bottom edge also has white and yellow pattern darning. Beadwork strip has continuous lozenge and swastika pattern in tiny glass beads (imported/traded) in black, yellow, pink, ochre and blue. Applied beadwork panel is 5.5cm wide, 12 cm wide including shells. Shell embroidery - small shells sewn into fabric in decorative pattern.
